Sissy's Story
It all began in 1974 with a true pioneer named Sissy McGill. As a devout animal lover, Sissy believed that pets deserved nutritious pet food to keep them healthy and happy. However, finding high-quality pet foods in America wasn’t as easy as in Europe. So, she created Solid Gold® to set a new ‘gold’ standard for pet nutrition in the United States.
Our very first product, Hund-N-Flocken, was proof that holistic pet food was far from a pipe dream all those years ago. And now, over 50 years later, Sissy McGill’s bold vision still lives on. Whether it’s our specialized recipes or groundbreaking ingredients, Solid Gold® is forever fueled by Sissy’s uncompromising approach to quality, innovation, and nourishment for every pet family.

From our humble beginnings to our latest breakthroughs, here’s the story of how we became the gut guru that pet parents love.
1974 A Bold Beginning
At a time when American pet food lagged behind and needed a pioneer, a bold woman named Sissy McGill decided to step up and do something about it.
With gut health in mind, Sissy defied the odds and launched Solid Gold® out of San Diego, California – starting with her first flagship product Hund-N-Flocken.
1982 A ‘Must-Sea’ Innovation
Eight years after launching Solid Gold® to the masses, Sissy McGill’s passion for innovation led her to something that would change the way we think about pet supplements forever.
In 1982, Solid Gold® launched SeaMeal – a groundbreaking vitamin and mineral supplement that provided unprecedented gut, immune system, skin, and coat support for pets.
2012-2015 Solid Gold® Gives Back
Making innovative products is only a fraction of what we do at Solid Gold®. So, let’s fast- forward to a time when our mission inspired us to give back to pets in need.
From 2012 to 2015, Solid Gold® partnered with like-minded organizations such as SPCA and Petco to donate over $500,000 of pet food to charities that love dogs and cats as much as we do.
2016 Just a Few Clicks Away!
If there’s one thing we know about Sissy McGill’s vision for Solid Gold®, it’s that she wants every pet parent to know that there’s a better alternative for what we put in their food bowl.
In 2016, we launched our premium products on Amazon and Chewy to make it easier for pet parents to find the high-quality gut support they want for their dogs and cats.
2020 A ‘Healthy & Happy’ New Era
In the years that followed, we remained hard at work bringing great breakthroughs of gut health to pet families. But in 2020, we decided it was time to take our mission to the next level.
